Launch

Section 1Large Cap vs Total Market

FNILX (Fidelity ZERO Large Cap Index Fund, launched 2018) tracks the Fidelity U.S. Large Cap Index, about 500 of the largest U.S. companies, making it Fidelity's free alternative to an S&P 500 fund. VTI tracks the Morningstar US Total Market Index (formerly CRSP) and holds about 3,500 stocks. If you are deciding between these two, you are really deciding between large caps only and the whole market.

Section 2How They've Performed

Over the five years ending September 2026, FNILX returned 13.49% a year and VTI 12.56%, with nearly identical volatility. Like the S&P 500, FNILX benefited from mega-cap leadership over that period. VTI's mid and small caps held it back recently but add diversification that has paid off in other periods.

Section 3The Closer Comparisons

FNILX's natural rivals are FXAIX and VOO (all large-cap), and VTI's natural Fidelity rival is FZROX (both total market). If you are at Fidelity and want the total market for free, FZROX is the more direct substitute for VTI. If you want large caps for free, FNILX is the zero-fee cousin of FXAIX.

Section 4Which Should You Choose?

In a Fidelity IRA where you want large-cap U.S. exposure, FNILX is free and simple. If you want the entire market, an ETF you can take to any broker, or a fund for a taxable account, VTI is the better tool. Either works as a core holding; just don't assume FNILX and VTI hold the same things.
